This is a very easy candle project to make.  No gluing or cutting, just collect items for the theme of your choosing and place them on the tray.  Sans the caveman references, this is so easy a child could do it.  Even the toddlers will love getting involved.

tray-votives

Materials:

  • 1 long rectangular tray.  (wood, metal, glass, ceramic)
  • Assorted color coordinated votives.
  • Snug fitting glass votive holders if you plan on burning the candles.
  • Assorted “stuff” for decorating around the tray.  Dried leaves, cinnamon sticks, beads, flat river stones, glass baubles, pine cones, Christmas ornaments, acorns, trinkets, broken jewelry, fancy buttons, fake jewels and crystals, marbles, etc.

Instructions:

Place the candles in votive holders if you plan on lighting them. Line them up on the tray and decorated with your stuff. That’s as McGyver as it gets!

This quick an easy project is very addictive. Soon you’ll be scouting store shelves and thrift stores for fun trays and even plates. Switch out the colored candles and the stuff to make holiday themes. It’s a great little project for the kids, too. Give them a bag or box so each child can collect their own stuff.

Holiday Scented Candle Project

Holiday Scented Candle Project

Materials:

  • Table runner, table cloth, or placemat (solid or non-busy patterns work best)
  • 2 large apples
  • 2 scented votive candles
  • Assorted pine cones
  • Fake snow
  • Pine boughs (left over from trimming the bottom of the Christmas tree)
  • Assorted Christmas picks
  • Holiday wired-edge ribbon or a string of golden beads
  • Optional decorative mittens
  • 2 squares of scrap cardboard about 4″x4″ to glue to bottom of apples
  • Glue gun
  • Paring knife
  • Small spoon

Instructions:

This is a free-form arrangement placed right on top and in the center of a table runner or table cloth.  It’s easy to do, but requires a little bit of assembly.

Pull any stems off the apples.  Next, you’ll need to hollow out the center of the apple to make a receptacle for the votive.  To do that, take a scented votive candle and place it on top and centered on the apple.  Using a pen, trace the candle’s circumference onto the apple.

Stand the votive on a flat surface and stand the knife blade next to it.  Mark the candle’s height on the blade so you’ll know how deeply to cut into the apple.  Carefully insert the paring knife vertically into the apple on the traced line.  Push the knife into the apple up to the marking on the blade.  Remove the knife, rotate the apple a little and insert the knife again about 1/8″ from the first cut.  Keep doing this until you’ve gone completely around the traced circle.  Now scoop out the center of the circle.  You might want slash several X’s with the knife in the center of the circle to section up the core for easier removal.

Then insert the candle into the hollowed out apple.  If the hole’s not big enough, scrape out a little more.

To keep the apples from rolling off the table, hot glue their bottoms to a cardboard square.

Set the assembled apples on the table and arrange the pine boughs around them.  Now would be a good time to loosely weave the wired-edged ribbon or beads throughout the branches.  Insert the assorted Christmas picks into the branches.  Trim with pine cones and sprinkle the fake snow.

Light the candles, but make sure none of the decorations or pine boughs are near the flame.
